Affton Days is coming up next weekend - Sep 17th, and the ACFP will be present from 11a-4p with brochures and information to hand out to participants, as well as a barrel at the ready to accept donations. NEW this year – the ACFP will have reusable grocery sacks to give away! The first 100 people to bring 10 items or make a $10 donation to the ACFP will receive a eco-friendly reusable grocery sack, emblazoned with the ACFP logo (limit one per person). Now friends of the ACFP can shop in style AND increase awareness of the Food Pantry’s mission at the same time! Donation Receipts will be available as well – $7 of the donation amount will be tax deductible.

ACFP Board Member Loses Battle With Cancer, Gains Heaven

On Friday of last week, the Affton Christian Food Pantry lost one of its own Board Members, Marilyn Sax. The representative from St. Mark Catholic Church, Marilyn served faithfully on the Board for a number of years, having lately become involved with the Volunteer Committee. Our condolences go out to the grieving family, even as we are assured of seeing Marilyn again someday with our Lord in heaven. Marilyn’s obituary follows:

Strategic Planning

Through a grant from The Lutheran Foundation, the ACFP was able to collaborate with the Rome Group to go through a process of Strategic Planning. The Rome Group helped us to survey other food pantries, our member churches, our volunteers, and our clients to help us learn more about how the Food Pantry is performing and how we can look to the future and continue to fulfill our stated mission – to be a continuous and reliable source of food to the needy in the Affton area. The process will wrap up in Fall of 2010, look for more updates to come!

The New Food Pantry!

We’ve moved!! The new location for the ACFP is at 4960 Heege Road, just across the road from the former location. We are grateful to the many workers, volunteers, and donors who made the move to the expanded, updated site possible! Special thanks to St. George for including us in the plans for the renovation of their facility, as well as to Shop’n'Save for the donation of the shelving to be used in the new pantry – giving our clients even more of a real shopping experience. All glory to God for His continued work through the ACFP!

Affton Days!!

The ACFP was present and participating in the Affton Days event, held right outside the Pantry’s door! Sharing a space underneath the shade of the Affton Chamber of Commerce tent, representatives and volunteers from ACFP had a wonderful time chatting with neighbors and sharing the Pantry’s story and mission. Many thanks to those who helped organize our little “booth”, and also to those who stopped by to show their support!

Our New Director

The Affton Christian Food Pantry is pleased to announce the hiring of our first Executive Director, Kristina Paul. Kris is a graduate of Drake University and a student at Concordia Seminary where she is preparing for service within the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) as a deaconess. LCMS deaconesses are theologically trained women who are prepared to serve our Lord and His church through acts of mercy, spiritual care, and teaching of faith. Kris will be serving the ACFP as part of her deaconess internship, the final step in her preparation for ministry. Beginning in August 2009, Kris will spend about 10-15 hours a week at the pantry, focusing primarily on community relations and fund-raising/grant-writing. If you would like to have Kris come and speak to your church, school, or other organization, please contact the Pantry at 314-580-3138.

Charitable Contributions and 501(c)(3) Corporate Status

The benefit of non-profit status for Federal Income tax purposes is the deductibility from adjusted gross income as an itemized deduction for individuals. Also, the individual contributor can be assured that his/her contributions must be used to fulfill the stated objectives of the 501(c)(3) corporation and that if the 501(c)(3) is ever dissolved the money cannot be given to any officer or employee of the charitable organization. In the case of the Affton Christian Food Pantry, the assets (money) would revert to the member churches.

For the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation (ACFP), the benefit is that the corporation is not subject to Federal or State income taxes on the contributions received. This allows the corporation to utilize the full amount of money it raises for the purpose or objectives of the corporation (in the case of the ACFP, providing food and assistance to the needy of our community). Maintaining this status also allows the ACFP to benefit the community by being eligible to receive its portion of the food donated to the needy through annual food drives, i.e., Scouting for Food Drive by the St. Louis Area Council of Boy Scouts, in addition to other food drives at schools and organizations in the Affton area. As an official 501(c)(3) Corporation, the ACFP is also eligible to apply for various cash grants from other charitable foundations and organizations.

In Memory of Nicholas A. Moramarco

We are saddened by the death of our President-Elect, Board Member, and loyal volunteer, Nick Moramarco. Nick passed away on March 10, 2009. He was a strong supporter of the food pantry from its inception. Nick represented St. Dominic Savio Church on the committee, which worked diligently to expand the pantry to an ecumenical level. Thanks to his dedicated work, the Affton Christian Food Pantry has grown to 10 member churches and over 400 individual members at the time of this article. Nick worked at the pantry on Tuesday afternoon, meeting with clients and helping them in any way possible. Every Saturday morning, he brought frozen food to the pantry for distribution. Nick devoted his life to Christian service through the St. vincent de paul Society, the ACFP, his work at Midtown Catholic Charities, and many, many ministries at his own parish. Shortly after Nick’s death, the ACFP received official word that our application for 501(c)(3) tax exempt status was approved. We can’t help but feel that Nick’s work was instrumental in this achievement. We offer prayers of comfort for Nick’s family, especially his wife Helen, and prayers of thanksgiving for a life lived in such diligent and faithful service to the Lord.
